旧正月の新年会|ローヘイをしました!

This Chinese New Year (also known as Lunar New Year), We went to a Chinese restaurant with some of our students to experience tossing YuSheng.

YuSheng (鱼生) is a dish created in Singapore/Malaysia in a restaurant. It includes many ingredients, including daikon, carrots, red pepper, turnips, red pickled ginger, sun-dried oranges, key lime leaves, Chinese parsley, chilli, jellyfish, chopped peanuts, sesame seeds, Chinese crackers, five spice powder, plum sauce, vinegar, kumquat paste, sesame oil and... last but not least, raw fish!

All the ingredients have different meanings, similar to the Osechi in Japan. Someone will usually say the good meanings while putting together the salad.

Let's look at some of the meanings here!

Fish (鱼) 年年有余 Abundance through the year - 鱼 and 余 has the same sound
Lime (橘子) 大吉大利 Good luck, smooth sailing - 橘 and 吉 sound similar
Carrot (红萝卜) 鸿运当头 Good luck is coming - 红 and 鸿 has the same sound
Peanut crumbs 金银满屋 Home filled with gold and silver - Peanuts look similar to gold
Plum sauce 甜甜蜜蜜 May life always be sweet - Plum sauce is sweet




Then, we toss everything together while saying "fa (发)", which means become rich. It is believed that the higher you throw, the more luck and money you will get, so toss it high into the sky!

Lo Hei! Fa Fa Fa!
